Forbidden City Tickets: Entry Prices and Separately Ticketed Galleries

Standard Forbidden City tickets cost RMB 60 per adult during the April–October peak season and RMB 40 during the November–March low season. The Treasure Gallery and the Clock and Watch Gallery are separately ticketed at RMB 10 each for a full-price adult. For a visit that includes both galleries, budget RMB 80 in peak season or RMB 60 in low season, before any booking service, guide, or transport charges.

For most first-time visitors, the main admission ticket is enough to explore the palace’s major courtyards, ceremonial spaces, and accessible areas. Add the galleries if their collections interest you and your schedule leaves time to see them properly. Before paying, check the Palace Museum’s official booking information for your visit date: ticket availability, concession eligibility, and exhibition access can affect what you should reserve.

What the admission price actually covers

The Forbidden City is administered as the Palace Museum in Beijing. Its standard admission ticket gives access to the main palace grounds and the buildings, displays, and exhibitions open to general ticket holders on that day. It does not guarantee access to every hall or room within the complex. Conservation work, exhibition changes, and operational restrictions can affect which interiors are accessible.

The standard adult price structure is straightforward:

  • April 1–October 31: RMB 60 for main admission.
  • November 1–March 31: RMB 40 for main admission.
  • Treasure Gallery: RMB 10 in addition to main admission.
  • Clock and Watch Gallery: RMB 10 in addition to main admission.

The two gallery tickets are supplements. Buying one does not replace the main admission ticket or provide independent entry into the Forbidden City. If a booking page shows a very low price, check whether it is selling only a gallery supplement, a concession ticket, or a reservation service.

Main admission also should not be read as “everything included.” Guide services, audio guides, meals, transport, and other optional services have their own terms and charges. A tour package may combine several of these, but its higher price needs to be assessed against the services actually provided.

Which separately ticketed gallery is worth adding?

The extra gallery charges are modest compared with the cost of a Beijing trip. The more consequential choice is how much attention and walking time you want to devote to additional exhibitions. A palace visit can become tiring, especially when a group tries to cover the main ceremonial route, side courtyards, and both galleries in one continuous walk.

The Treasure Gallery: for decorative arts and imperial objects

The Treasure Gallery, also called the Treasury in some booking descriptions, occupies part of the northeastern palace area associated with the Palace of Tranquil Longevity. Its appeal lies in the craftsmanship, materials, and ceremonial significance of imperial objects. Individual displays can change, so choose it for the collection’s broader character rather than an expectation of seeing a particular object.

This is a useful addition for visitors interested in jewelry, precious materials, decorative arts, and the material culture of court life. It also gives the visit a different rhythm after the scale and repetition of the main courtyards. Travelers who enjoy looking closely at objects may find it more rewarding than extending their route simply to pass through more buildings.

Allow for the route as well as the exhibition. The gallery’s position within the complex makes it sensible to plan around it, particularly if anyone in your party has limited walking stamina. Adding it at the last moment can create an awkward detour.

The Clock and Watch Gallery: for mechanical ingenuity

The Clock and Watch Gallery focuses on historic timepieces and their craftsmanship. It is particularly appealing if you enjoy mechanical objects, decorative design, or the exchange of objects and techniques between China and other parts of the world.

Its subject matter can provide a welcome change from palace architecture. However, do not assume that admission includes a live demonstration or that every clock will be operating. If a demonstration is central to your interest, check the museum’s published arrangements for the date rather than relying on a tour listing or an older visitor account.

If you can choose only one gallery, use your interests to decide: precious objects and courtly display favor the Treasure Gallery; mechanisms and timepieces favor the Clock and Watch Gallery. Buying both is reasonable for a longer visit, but there is little benefit in paying for exhibitions you will only rush through.

How much should you budget for your ticket combination?

For a full-price adult, the combinations below make it easier to compare a direct booking with an agency or tour offer:

  • Main admission only: RMB 60 in peak season; RMB 40 in low season.
  • Main admission plus either gallery: RMB 70 in peak season; RMB 50 in low season.
  • Main admission plus both galleries: RMB 80 in peak season; RMB 60 in low season.

For two full-price adults visiting both galleries, that is RMB 160 in peak season or RMB 120 in low season. These totals cover admission only. They provide a useful baseline when a booking platform quotes a higher amount.

A higher price can be reasonable when it includes a guide, help with reservations, or transport. The listing should make those additions clear. “Forbidden City tour” alone does not tell you whether both galleries are included, whether the guide accompanies you inside, or whether the charge is for a private group or a shared departure.

Look for a breakdown that identifies the main ticket, any gallery supplements, the service component, and the cancellation terms. Also check the guide’s language and meeting arrangements. A low advertised price loses its appeal if essential services appear only as extras during checkout.

Seasonal pricing should rarely determine the timing of an entire Beijing trip. The difference between peak- and low-season main admission is RMB 20 per full-price adult. Weather, daylight, hotel costs, and your wider itinerary are likely to have a greater effect on the trip than that saving alone.

Concessions can change the total, especially for families

The adult totals above should not be applied automatically to children, students, or older travelers. The Palace Museum publishes concession and free-admission policies, including provisions for visitors under 18 and eligible older visitors. The applicable conditions and supporting documents matter as much as the headline discount.

For an international family, check eligibility against each traveler’s age and identification. Do not assume that a concession described on a third-party website applies to every overseas visitor, or that a student card from any institution will be accepted. Use the official policy for the relevant ticket category.

Main admission and gallery admission also need separate attention. A traveler who qualifies for free or reduced main admission should check the rules for the Treasure Gallery and Clock and Watch Gallery individually. Applying the adult bundle price to everyone can overstate the budget; assuming one exemption covers everything can understate it.

Free admission does not necessarily remove the reservation requirement. Include every traveler in the booking process as instructed, even when their ticket price is zero. Bring the identification and any supporting documents used to establish eligibility.

Secure the reservation before arranging the rest of the day

Price is only one part of buying Forbidden City tickets. Admission is managed through advance reservations and visitor limits, so having the correct budget does not ensure that your preferred date will be available. Check the official reservation calendar early enough to understand when your date becomes bookable.

Use the Palace Museum’s official website or its designated booking channels as the starting point. If you use an intermediary, establish how and when it confirms a successful reservation. A payment receipt or an acknowledgment that your request has been received may have a different status from confirmed admission.

International visitors should follow the booking channel’s instructions for passport information carefully. Names, document numbers, visit dates, and ticket categories should match the travelers who will attend. Bring the original identification used for the reservation, and review the museum’s entry instructions before leaving for the visit.

The museum generally closes on Mondays, with exceptions such as certain public holidays. Opening hours, last admission, and exhibition access can also vary. Check the actual date in the official calendar before attaching a nonrefundable transfer or another timed activity to your palace visit.

Plan your approach around the designated visitor entrance at the Meridian Gate, or Wumen. Access arrangements around central Beijing can involve security checks and additional walking. If your itinerary also includes Tiananmen Square, check its separate access and reservation requirements; a Palace Museum booking should not be treated as covering neighboring attractions.

Gallery arrangements deserve a check at the same time. Confirm whether your chosen booking channel lets you reserve the supplements alongside main admission and what options apply if you decide later. Avoid building your visit around an assumption that every ticket can be bought at any point after arrival.

Choose a ticket that fits the visit you can realistically make

For a first visit focused on architecture, photographs, and the principal palace spaces, main admission is a sensible choice. It leaves room to move at a comfortable pace and spend time in the areas that hold your attention. You do not need both supplementary galleries to make the visit worthwhile.

For a longer visit with a strong interest in collections, add one or both galleries and plan their locations into your route. Check exhibition opening arrangements before deciding the order. Leave room for security procedures, rest breaks, and the walk out of the complex rather than allocating every available minute to exhibits.

Families with young children and visitors with limited stamina may get more value from one carefully chosen gallery than from a full set of tickets. The additional cash cost is small; the effort of reaching and appreciating each exhibition is more significant. A shorter route with time to stop can produce a more satisfying visit.

Before completing payment, read the booking as a set of specific commitments: the correct date, the correct travelers, main admission secured, desired galleries included, and service charges explained. If a guided package names either gallery as a highlight, check that its supplementary ticket and visiting time are actually included in the itinerary. That detail determines whether the price buys the visit you expect.
