The First International Standard for Camping Tourism Co-Led by China Has Been Published

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially published Requirements and Recommendations for Camping Tourism Site Facilities and Services (ISO 18980). This is the world’s first international standard in the field of camping tourism. Jointly led by China, Germany, and Argentina, it provides guidance on facilities and services at camping tourism sites worldwide and also marks a major breakthrough in China’s standardization efforts in the tourism accommodation sector.

The standard’s key significance lies in establishing a common international reference for facilities and services at camping tourism sites. For site development and operations, its value may first be seen in facility planning and service management: when developing plans, organizing service processes, or assessing existing operational arrangements, relevant businesses can use the same set of standards as a basis for discussion, reducing differences in how facility and service requirements are understood.

The standard’s title includes both “requirements” and “recommendations,” so its specific provisions should be distinguished by their nature when applying it. The publication of an international standard does not in itself mean that all sites in every location have adopted uniform rules or that all sites must immediately make the same changes. For operators, the actual impact will still depend on the standard’s applicable provisions, local regulations, and whether they choose to adopt it.

China’s role in jointly leading the development of the standard reflects its participation in setting international standards for camping tourism. In terms of practical changes in the industry, what will be worth watching is how the standard is adopted in site development and operations, and whether its application can provide clearer guidance for facility planning and lead to a more consistent service experience. The standard’s publication provides a reference framework; its impact on day-to-day site operations and visitor experiences will need to be observed through practical application.
