The Shaolin Kung Fu Journey

Add to cart

Shaolin Temple is the ancestral temple of Chinese Zen Buddhism and the birthplace of martial arts worldwide, renowned for its "Zen and martial arts unity."

Located at the foot of Song Mountain in Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, it was built in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 AD) and has a history of over 1,500 years. It is not only a sacred Buddhist site but also a synonym for "Chinese martial arts" in the hearts of countless overseas Chinese.

Three Highlights

1. Ancestral Temple of Zen Buddhism: During the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Indian monk Bodhidharma meditated facing a wall here for nine years, establishing Zen Buddhism. Thus, Shaolin Temple is also known as the "Ancestral Temple of Zen Buddhism," serving as an important testament to the sinicization of Buddhism.

2. Shaolin Kung Fu: The world's martial arts originate from Shaolin. Monks here have practiced martial arts since the Tang Dynasty, and today, there are daily kung fu performances featuring authentic techniques in fist, staff, sword, and spear. Shaolin Kung Fu emphasizes "Zen and martial arts unity"—training martial arts is also a form of Zen cultivation.

3. Millennial Ancient Temple: The temple houses numerous precious cultural relics, including stone inscriptions from the Tang and Song Dynasties, Tang Dynasty murals, and Ming Dynasty bronze bells. The plaque "Shaolin Temple" above the mountain gate was personally inscribed by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty.
