On October 16, 2026, the Longmen Grottoes Research Institute announced its latest achievements in digital conservation and revealed plans to upgrade the “Night Tour of Longmen” program. The upgrade is set to introduce more advanced augmented reality (AR) guide devices and optimize nighttime visitor routes to enhance visitors’ immersive cultural experience. It is expected to be fully operational in early November.

The announcement covers two areas: digital conservation and the nighttime visitor experience. The release of digital conservation achievements does not necessarily mean that those achievements have been applied to the night tour. As for the visitor experience, the currently confirmed upgrade plans focus primarily on guide devices and visitor routes. Whether the two can work together effectively is one way to assess the upgrade’s practical value.

The experiential value of augmented reality guide devices depends on whether they help visitors better understand the cultural content before them.
