Want to give your child an immersive experience of making Henan's intangible cultural heritage? The Luoyang Tang Sancai (Tang tri-colored pottery) workshop is popular with families, but does the glaze contain lead? Is it safe for children to participate? This article provides authoritative answers.
Traditional Tang Sancai (three-color glazed pottery) is a type of low-temperature lead-glazed pottery. Its classic glaze colors (yellow, green, and white) rely on lead oxide as a flux, and the firing temperature is approximately 800℃–900℃. Archaeological testing shows that the lead leaching from the glaze layer of original Tang Dynasty pieces can reach 3–8 mg/dm² (based on the limits in GB 6675.4-2014 "Toy Safety Part 4: Migration of Certain Elements"), confirming that it is indeed a lead-containing system.
However, the Tang Sancai DIY workshops in contemporary cultural tourism settings have fully upgraded their material systems. Compliant workshops in Henan generally use a "lead-free glaze base + mineral colorant" formula. A 2023 sampling test by the Luoyang Municipal Institute of Quality and Technical Supervision showed that the lead migration of the glazes used by 12 mainstream research and study cooperation units was <0.02 mg/dm², only 1/25 of the national standard limit (0.5 mg/dm²), meeting the Class A safety requirements of GB/T 30432-2013 "Limits and Determination Methods for Heavy Metals in Glazes".
It should be noted that safety does not mean "zero contact risk." Children must still wear food-grade nitrile gloves (100% provided), use special sponge brushes, and work in a well-ventilated workshop—this is one of the standardized service points that Henan Lelv Travel Agency provides for all parent-child groups.

To ensure the safety of children during their immersive learning experiences, Henan Lelv Travel Agency, in conjunction with the Luoyang Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center, has developed the "Tang Sancai Study Workshop Safety Implementation Checklist," covering the entire process before, during, and after the workshop:
This list has been embedded in our "Luoyang Through Time Tour" SOP. In the past three years, it has served a total of 2,860 families with children and has had 0 glaze-related health complaints.
For educational institutions, study tour bases, and corporate team building procurement clients, we have identified three key evaluation dimensions for workshop selection. The data comes from a sample survey in the 2024 Luoyang Culture and Tourism Bureau's "White Paper on Intangible Cultural Heritage Study Tour Services":
This standard has been applied to study tour programs customized by our agency for 27 educational institutions, including Zhengzhou Foreign Language School and Beijing Shijia Primary School, reducing the average delivery cycle to 3.2 working days.
As a local, first-hand resource provider rooted in Luoyang, we do not subcontract or operate under affiliation. All Tang Sancai workshops undergo on-site factory inspections and have signed a "Safety Service Commitment Letter." You can access the following at any time: ① Real-time monitoring video stream of the workshop (connected to our management system); ② Batch test reports of glazes for the past 3 months; ③ Health certificates and first aid training certificates of the instructors.
We offer differentiated support for different procurement roles: educational institutions can apply for sample glaze safety test kits (including test method instructions); corporate clients enjoy exclusive group customization benefits, such as adding value-added services like corporate culture seal firing and bilingual teaching manuals; and government procurement projects support full-process auditing and electronic acceptance documents.
